City location does not create a different national rule. Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney are therefore covered here rather than repeated as nearly identical city pages.
Australia’s federal Poisons Standard creates a narrow Schedule 8 pathway for an unapproved psilocybine medicine used for treatment-resistant depression. Access is limited to psychiatrists specifically authorized through the TGA Authorised Prescriber scheme, while state and territory laws still control prescribing, possession, supply, storage, and professional practice. This does not legalize mushrooms, home cultivation, personal use, retail sale, or ordinary medical access.
Status in brief
An authorized psychiatrist may access an unapproved psilocybine medicine for treatment-resistant depression after the required ethics and TGA approvals.
Patients cannot take the medicine home. Treatment must occur under the authorized clinical arrangements, not through retail shops, dispensaries, or general prescribing.
The pathway concerns a controlled medicinal product, not consumer mushrooms or extracts. Import and export require Office of Drug Control licences and permits, including for fungi containing psilocybine.
Boundary
A 2026 TGA interim decision proposes an additional Schedule 8 indication for existential distress toward the end of life, but public consultation remains open through July 31, 2026. It is not a final scheduling change and does not expand current access unless and until a final decision takes effect.
