Medication interactions
Some interactions blunt the effect, some change it, and one carries a serious safety risk. Read this before anything else if you take a prescription medication — and treat it as a prompt to talk to a doctor.

In brief
Psilocybin interacts with several common medication classes. SSRIs and SNRIs can blunt psychedelic effects over time by downregulating 5-HT2A receptors. MAOIs can intensify and prolong effects. The most serious concern is lithium: combining lithium with psychedelics has been associated with seizures and is widely treated as a combination to avoid.
This entry is informational, not a clearance to combine anything. Do not stop a prescribed medication without medical guidance, and do not combine psilocybin with a medication without speaking to a doctor first. The rule is simple: check before you start, and treat lithium as a hard stop until a clinician says otherwise.

Three categories of interaction
SSRIs and SNRIs may alter effects
Survey data report weaker psilocybin effects more often with SSRIs and SNRIs, while controlled findings are mixed. Safety and effectiveness cannot be predicted from receptor theory alone.
Do not stop medication alone
If you take an antidepressant, do not discontinue it to microdose without medical supervision. Abrupt discontinuation carries its own risks independent of psilocybin.
MAOIs intensify
Direct psilocybin–MAOI interaction data are limited. Because MAOIs can create serious interactions with many serotonergic substances, this combination requires individualized medical review.
Lithium is the serious one
An analysis of online reports found a concerning seizure signal when lithium was combined with classic psychedelics. The evidence is not a controlled trial, but it supports avoiding unsupervised combination and seeking clinical advice.
Other classes warrant checking
Tramadol, some stimulants, and other serotonergic or seizure-threshold-lowering drugs warrant a clinician check. The general principle is that polypharmacy needs professional review.
The operative rule
Check before you start. This entry is educational; it does not replace a conversation with a prescriber who knows your full medication list.
What the data shows — and how strong it is
Verdict
Interaction evidence varies by medicine and person. Do not stop prescribed medication or combine substances based on a website.
Common questions
Answered directly
Q · 01
Can I microdose psilocybin while taking an SSRI?
Speak to your doctor first. Long-term SSRI use can downregulate the 5-HT2A receptors that psilocybin acts on, which tends to blunt the effect. More importantly, do not stop a prescribed antidepressant to microdose without medical supervision, because abrupt discontinuation carries its own risks.
Q · 02
Is it dangerous to combine psilocybin with lithium?
Lithium combined with classic psychedelics has a concerning seizure signal in case and online-report data. Do not combine them without explicit medical guidance.
Q · 03
Do MAOIs change the effect of psilocybin?
Direct interaction evidence is limited. MAOIs have clinically important interaction potential with many serotonergic substances, so a prescriber or pharmacist should review any proposed combination.
